It’s super exciting when you take that step and sign up to become a Crossfit member but it also might seem a little daunting at the same time. There’s going to be quite a lot of new things coming your way! If you’re just starting out or thinking about joining, here’s our top tips for Crossfit beginners that will help you get started! 


1. Choose the right Box for you 

There are Crossfit gyms popping up everywhere these days. How do you choose which one is best for you? Firstly, you want to check that it’s an affiliated Crossfit gym. There’s many ‘Crossfit style’ gyms around but if they’re not affiliated it means they’re not officially Crossfit! Other things to consider would be, the experience of the coaches, class structure (not every box is ran the same), programming and community.


2. Build up slowly & don’t compare yourself to others

When you turn up for your first CrossFit session, you’re going to see people in all sorts of shape & at different levels of fitness. Some of them, may have been doing CrossFit for years and others will be just like you at the beginning of their journey.

Remember, the competition is never against another person, don’t beat yourself up because you’re only lifting half the weight that another person is lifting. Focus on yourself and your own goals, doing a little bit more each time than you did last time. Everybody starts at the beginning!!


3. Get educated

If you have a little bit of time before you turn up to your first CrossFit workout, do some research. Things like the CrossFit terminology and different WODs (workout of the day) are things that you can take a look at before hand, to become familiar with things. 


4. Learn the exercises and techniques first 

You need to start off by learning the basic techniques of movements such as squats, deadlifts, clean and jerk, and the snatch. It’s a good idea to do this away from the daily classes, in more of a controlled setting.

5. Listen to your body & don’t overdo it

CrossFit workouts are intense and it’s important that when you start, you take enough rest in between sessions and really listen to what your body is telling you. Crossfit beginners should probably start by training only 2-3 times per week until you feel like you don’t require as much rest in between sessions.


6. Listen to the coaches

In CrossFit affiliate boxes you can be certain that the coaches know what they are doing. The coaches will help you to acquire the proper techniques and also how to scale certain exercises to suit you and your ability. If you listen to your coach, you will be able to train safely and prevent injuries from happening!


7. Invest in the right clothing 

Not necessarily when you just begin Crossfit but once you start to become more familiar, it’s a good idea to start looking into clothing and equipment such as Crossfit shoes, wrist straps, hand grips etc. Even though these things aren’t a necessity, once you start training you’ll see how they will certainly benefit and assist you during the WOD.
